Prevention Monthly Briefing

Team/Person of the Month!

September is National Recovery Month! This national, annual observance is celebrated in various ways by youth and adults in recovery. For nearly 50 years, recovering individuals, alumni and/or family members in treatment programs throughout Southern California have competed in the Al-Impics. Through competitive games, track & field events, prevention activities and a variety of social and recreational activities, the Al-Impics promotes overall health and wellness. The recovering persons experience success and camaraderie that enable them to face various social, psychological, and physical challenges. This year, Los Angeles Al-impics virtual event will take place on Friday, September 17, 2021. The theme for 2021 Los Angeles Al-Impics is "Erase the Stigma, Embrace the Change".

LA County SAPC Prevention Network: The LAC Prevention Network continue its excellent summer programming, and observes National Recovery Month by hosting Drive-In movie events during the month of September. For an upcoming schedule of these events, please regularly check: https://www.lacpp.org/

SAPC Issues/Actions

COVID-19 Update:During last month, COVID-19 transmission in LA County remained at the “high” level, and DPH reported cases at an average rate of about 3,400 cases a day for most of August. To date, nearly 8 million people have been tested for COVID-19 and had test results reported in LA County. As schools and institutes of higher education return to session and their routine testing programs come back online, DPH expects to see hundreds of thousands of more test results each week and correspondingly, an increase in cases. Public Health continues to offer vaccinations with same-day, on-site registration at County-run vaccination sites. Please visit VaccinateLACounty.com for more information.

LA County Schools Return & Student & Parent Ambassador Program
LAC Dept. of Public Health continues to work with schools to support parents and families in ensuring a safe return to school for students and school employees. To aid these efforts, students and parents are encouraged to join Public Health to help stop the spread of COVID-19 by becoming ambassadors. The DPH’s TK-12 Ambassador Programs educate and empower students and parents as essential partners in each school’s prevention efforts. For more information, click on the corresponding link.
