CPSP Training and Workshops Description

Basic CPSP Training:
(6 Hour Group Class)

This class is an overview of the CPSP model of care and Title 22 (CCR) program requirements, including initial assessment, trimester reassessments, and postpartum assessment. Using a case study, participants will get hands-on experience developing an individualized patient care plan. CPSP documentation requirements are also discussed.
Prerequisite: None
Intended Audience: Comprehensive Perinatal Health Worker (CPHW)and others who provide direct perinatal patient care and have not attended Basic Training in the past two years.

CPSP Basic Training Packet (revised 1/6/2010)

CPSP Assessment and Individualized Care Plan Training:
(6 Hour Group Class)

Participants will learn how to administer the Initial CPSP Assessment/Reassessment and Postpartum Assessment tools. Using a case study along with CPSP Protocols and Steps to Take Guidelines, patient problems and strengths will be identified and problems will be prioritized in order to develop an effective individualized patient care plan.
Prerequisite: CPSP Basic Trainig
Intended Audience: Comprehensive Perinatal Health Workers (CPHW)and others who provide direct perinatal patient care.

Case Coordination Workshop: (2.5 Hour Group Class)
A comprehensive discussion of the duties and responsibilities of the Case Coordinator, demonstrating how Case Coordination is an essential part of the patient care plan development process. Participants will explore necessary steps for making successful referrals and developing a community resource list. It is strongly recommended that participants be currently assigned as Case Coordinators.
Prerequisite: None
Intended Audience: Anyone with CPSP Case Coordination responsibilities

CPSP Case Coordination Training Packet

Perinatal Nutrition Assessment and Intervention:
(6 Hour Group Class)

This class is designed to increase the knowledge and assessment skills of CPSP practitioners and help them provide effective perinatal nutrition services. The anthropometric, biochemical, clinical, and dietary components of the CPSP nutrition assessment will be described and practiced. Participants will learn how to plot the client’s weight status, and complete the Perinatal Food Frequency questionnaire.
Prerequisite: CPSP Basic Training and CPSP Assessment and Individualized Care Plan Training
Intended Audience: Comprehensive Perinatal Health Workers (CPHW) and others who provide direct perinatal patient care.

Elements of Basic Breastfeeding - Assessment and Intervention
(6 Hour Group Class)

The goal is to increase the knowledge and skills of CPSP practitioners in providing perinatal breastfeeding assessment, intervention, and documentation of services. Training is interactive and, in addition to standard training materials, utilizes videos and other visual aids to enhance the learning experience.
Prerequisite: CPSP Basic Training

Intimate Partner Violence/Domestic Violence:
(3.5 Hours at provider site)

CPSP providers and staff will discover that IPV (Intimate Partner Violence/Domestic Violence) is a serious social and public health problem. Participants will learn about the "cycle of violence" and how myths regarding IPV can affect the care given to patients. Steps for screening a patient involved in IPV, as well as the clinic's legal responsibilities, will be explored. The class concludes with practice developing a patient safety plan and documentation of IPV on the patient’s care plan.
Prerequisite: CPSP Basic Training
Intended Audience: Comprehensive Perinatal Health Workers (CPHW) and others who provide direct perinatal patient care.

Protocol Workshop:
(2.5 Hour Group Class)

Participants will learn how to develop CPSP protocols as required by Title 22, California Code of Regulations. This hands-on workshop includes how to customize protocols and identify community resources. To fully benefit from this workshop, participants should bring their own office protocols, if available, and will work from them throughout the workshop. Annual protocol review and protocol update will also be discussed. Prenatal and postpartum protocol templates are posted on the CPSP website.
Prerequisite: None
Intended Audience: provider or other person responsible for developing the protocols.

Perinatal Depression Screening Training
(2 Hour Class at provider site)

The goal of this training is to promote for depression during and after pregnancy using Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). Participants will learn about etiology and types of depression, effective screening techniques using an interactive case study, available treatments for depression and additional resources for mental health referrals.
Prerequisite: None
Intended Audience: All staff is encouraged to attend. A physician or other clinician is required to participate to discuss medical liability issues.

The MacArthur Initiative on Depression and Primary Care website has been recently updated. This website has patient education material and screening tools available to download in Spanish.
