Who We Are

On April 5, 2022, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved a motion to establish the Office of Environmental Justice and Climate Health (OEJCH), with the purpose of advancing the County's commitment to improve public health outcomes and reduce public health disparities in communities overburdened by environmental exposures and poor air quality. The directive included the development of a strategic plan with a shift in focus from emergency response to prevention.

Our Mission

OEJCH works towards building thriving communities where people enjoy healthy lives safe from toxic exposures and the negative effects of climate change.

Environmental justice is not just about pollution; it’s about shaping the conditions for everyone to live healthier, safer lives.

— Office of Environmental Justice and Climate Health (OEJCH)

What We Do

  • Promote fair treatment and meaningful community involvement in the development and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Empower communities to respond to climate change health impacts and elevate community-led efforts, projects, and organizations to ensure equal protection and justice.
  • Prevent adverse health impacts from environmental injustice and climate change.

Why This Work Matters

  • Communities that live or work near industrial zones are exposed to toxic chemicals and experience more health effects, such as higher rates of asthma, heart disease, and other health issues.
  • Communities that experience higher temperatures and other climate health hazards experience health impacts such as heat stroke and other heat-related illness.
  • Low-income communities, and Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) disproportionately face greater exposure to pollution, environmental hazards, and climate health impacts.
  • Seniors and children are more vulnerable to climate health impacts.
