Reporting a Suspected Rabid Animal - for veterinarians
Veterinarians that suspect an animal has rabies should:

1. Isolate the animal from other animals and people.

2. Contact the closest Animal Control agency and request a rabies test of that animal, whether the animal bit a person or not.

3. Submit a Report.  Complete the Bite Reporting Form and fax to Public Health at 213-481-2375. If no person was bitten, leave the Person Bitten section blank.

4. Call our office, ask to speak to a veterinarian.  Our main number of 213-989-7060, hours are 8:00 am-5:00 pm, Mon-Fri and we are closed on holidays.  After hours, physicians are available for on-call to provide consultation regarding potential rabies exposures to humans and any other actions that should be taken (call the County Operator at 213-974-1234).

5. Prepare specimen for rabies testing.  Download the rabies specimen preparation procedure.
