Reporting a Suspected Rabid Animal

Veterinarians and Animal Shelters that suspect an animal may be showing clinical signs of rabies should isolate the animal and then arrange for a rabies test of that animal, whether the animal bit a person or not.

To report a suspected rabid animal, please submit a report, call our program, and prepare the specimen for rabies testing:

1. Submit a Report.  Use the Bite Reporting Form. You can either download a copy of the form, complete it, and fax it in to 562-401-7112, or you may use the online reporting portal.
If no person was bitten, leave the Person Bitten section blank (or if using the online portal, write in NONE in the required victim fields, and type in the date the animal first became ill in the bite date field).

2.. Call our office, ask to speak to a veterinarian.  Our main number of 562-401-7088, hours are 8:00 am-5:00 pm, Mon-Fri and we are closed on holidays.  Our inspectors and veterinarians are on call for emergencies after hours and on weekends.  After hours, call the Public Health Emergency Desk at those times, and ask to speak to the Veterinary Public Health inspector on duty: 213-989-7140.  The inspector may then contact one of our veterinarians.
