FACILITY INFORMATION:

Who can reserve City facilities and picnic areas?

La Mirada Residents and La Mirada Non-Profit groups can make reservations only. The reservation applicant must be a La Mirada resident and show proof of La Mirada residency by presenting a picture I.D. and utility bill to Community Services staff upon submittal of reservation application. Non-profit groups must have at least 75% of its members residing in La Mirada and have a La Mirada resident as the authorized representative reserving the facility. Facility reservations are not available on Holidays and Holiday weekends due to extensive use of City Facilities on such occasions.

Does La Mirada require reservations for picnics?

City Parks are available on a “first come, first served basis” to everyone. Residents can pay to reserve a particular picnic area if they would like to guarantee a spot. Fees and insurance vary depending on group size. Picnic areas are available for rental at Neff, Gardenhill, Creek and Windermere Parks.

Does La Mirada have in-door facilities available for rental?

The city has two in-door facilities available: Neff Park Barn and the Activity Center Multi-purpose room. Neff Barn is available between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. and can accommodate up to 150 people. The Activity Center Multi-purpose room is available on the weekends from 10a.m. to 11p.m., and accommodates up to 250 people.

Does La Mirada allow Astro-jumps?

Jumpers are allowed at City Parks with a paid reservation only. Insurance requirements.

Do you allow amplified sound in your parks or facilities?

Live and amplified music is permitted for reservations at the La Mirada Resource Center and the Activity Center. In order to minimize potential disruption to the use and enjoyment of adjacent properties, music/noise levels shall comply with La Mirada Municipal Code Sections 9.04.010 and 9.04.050. No live or amplified music is allowed on other City facilities, with the exception of the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts.

CLASS REGISTRATION INFORMATION:

How do I register for a class?

We currently accept three forms of registration: mail-in, walk-in and fax-in. Complete your registration form located in the back of your La Mirada Living brochure. Make sure to include Name, Address, Phone Number and Child’s date of birth (if under 18). If paying by credit card please include your complete credit card number (Visa and MasterCard accepted) with card expiration date. If you are paying by check please make it payable to the City Of La Mirada. Be sure to include alternate choices as classes do fill up quickly. For popular classes that consistently fill a daily lottery will be held. Please refer to “Registration Information” page for lottery dates and registration deadlines. The lottery involves all registration forms received before 3 p.m. and are randomly selected for participation in a requested class. Please consider yourself enrolled in class or activity unless you are notified otherwise. If you prefer a receipt as confirmation, please enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope along with your registration form. Refer to our “Registration Information page" for more details. What if my child is not the correct age?

Children must be the age specified by the day the class begins. Instructors may grant exceptions for certain classes consult with the class instructors.

How can I switch my class choice?

Call the Community Services department and a transfer will be granted as long as an alternative class opening is still available. You will be required to pay the difference if the new class fee is higher; or the balance may be refunded if the fee is lower.

If I am on a waiting list, how do I know if I may attend the class?

If a participant withdraws from a class, and an opening becomes available, the Community Services Department will notify you. Do not attend the class you are on a waiting list for unless our office notifies you.

May I attend the first class and register with the instructor?

No. Our instructors are not in a position to take funds for class. You must register with the Community Services Department before attending any class.

What is the Refund Policy?

If for some reason you are not able to continue with an activity or class, come in to the Comunity Services Department to complete a Refund Request Form or submit a written request by mail. These requests should be received before the third class meeting. Workshop refund requests should be received one week prior to the first day of the workshop. Back to: Contract Classes

SENIOR SERVICES INFORMATION:

Does the City have exercise programs for Seniors?

The City of La Mirada has free exercise classes for seniors at the La Mirada Community Gymnasium. Classes are held Monday thru Thursday and include low-impact and chair exercise. Call for specific times.

Is low-cost housing for Seniors available in La Mirada?

The La Mirada Activity Center has a complete list of senior housing available in the City including low and moderate-income facilities.

Does La Mirada have a Care Management program?

They provide in-home assessments of living conditions, mental and physical needs, and financial needs as well. For more information contact SASSFA at (562) 946-4711, or SECIL at (562) 862-6531. Two non-profit agencies serving the Southeast region of Los Angeles County provide care management services, SASSFA and SECIL.

Does La Mirada have a Senior nutrition program?

Café On The Green, the City’s senior nutrition program provides congregate and home delivered meals to seniors age 60 and over. A donation of $1.75 is requested for the congregate meal and $2.00 for the house delivered meal program. Lunch is served M-F at 11:30 a.m. at the La Mirada Activity Center.

Does the City offer trips for Seniors?

There are two Senior Clubs that provide trips for seniors. Both meet at the Activity Center. For more information please call (562) 902-3160.

Does La Mirada have dances for Seniors?

Dances are held at the Activity Center the First Thursday of every month at 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Live music is provided by “ The Country Gentlemen”.

Does the City help with Medicare information?

The City has an on-site HICAP representative available to counsel seniors on their short and long term medical insurance decisions. Appointments are required. For more information contact the Activity Center at (562) 902-3160.

Does the City have people who can come and help around the house?

The City has an employment referral service for La Mirada residents. The City maintains a database that matches seniors needs with local residents and businesses able to work. For more information please contact The La Mirada Activity Center at (562) 902-3160.

Does the City offer classes for Seniors?

The City offers various classes and seminars for seniors on a daily basis. See your current issue of the La Mirada Living.

Are the Senior programs only available to La Mirada residents?

The majority of the programs offered are open to residents and non-residents.

Does the City have computer classes specifically for Seniors?

The City offers Senior Net computer classes. Senior Net is a nationwide non-profit organization that works in partnership to provide classes taught by seniors for seniors.

Does the city have a Meals-on Wheels program?

The city has a Meal-on Wheels program that serves La Mirada residents only.

Health Screenings "Ask the Nurse" Hearing Aid Repair Care Management

FREE HEALTH SCREENINGS
Free health screenings are available at the LMAC, on the 1st Friday of each month, from 9 - 11a.m. for those 55+. Provided by the Whittier Health Center, the screenings offer health services such as health history and physical assessment, blood pressure, pulse, vision, hearing, nutritional screening, and medication review. Services are designed to complement, not substitute, regular medical visits. For an appointment, call (562) 902-3160.

FREE BLOOD PRESSURE TESTING
The "Ask the Nurse" program offers free blood pressure testing for seniors on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of every month from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the LMAC. Services are provided by a retired nurse and also include information regarding diet, exercise and health issues.

FREE HEARING AID REPAIR FOR SENIORS
This program offers free hearing aid repair on the 2nd Friday of each month from 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. The services include cleaning, battery door replacement, tubing changes, and other minor repairs. Free hearing aid repair is provided by Advantage Hearing Aid Professionals.

CARE FORCE ONE
Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital's "Care Force One", a mobile health clinic, provides various screenings on a rotating basis, such as: Diabetes Screening, Cholesterol Testing, PSA (prostate) Screening, and Blood Pressure Screening. Services are offered to those 50+ on a first come, first served basis on the 2nd Monday of each month from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. at the LMAC. For more information, call (562) 902-3160.

SENIOR NUTRITION
Nutritionally balanced hot lunches are served for seniors 60 years and older. Lunch is served Monday - Friday at 11:30 a.m. Come early to socialize and play cards, Scrabble, etc. Home-delivered meals are available 7 days a week for home-bound seniors. Suggested donations are $1.75 for meals at LMAC, and $2.00 for home delivered meals. Intergenerational programs are scheduled for special holidays, allowing seniors to meet children from local schools. For more information call (562) 947-8787.

CARE MANAGEMENT
Care management is available to frail elderly and functionally impaired adults to enable them to remain at home safely. Services include: In-home assessments of needs, development of care plans, arrangement & coordination of services, and monitoring & follow-up. Services are provided free of charge. HICAP: HEALTH INSURANCE COUNSELING
Offers information & assistance with Medicare benefits, health maintenance organizations (HMO's) and supplemental insurance. For an appointment, call (562) 902-3153

SAFE RETURN"
A program of the Alzheimer's Association. Alzheimer's Disease robs 4.5 million Americans of their ability to recognize familiar places and faces. This low cost "Safe Return" program identifies individuals, notifies the caregiver, and provides multiple types of identification, such as a bracelet or necklace. FREE INCOME TAX HELP OFFERED BY AARP!

Free federal and state income tax assistance will be offered by trained AARP volunteers at the La Mirada Activity Center from February 5 through April 10.

Senior Income Tax Assistance is held every Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Low Income Tax Assistance meets every Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. Assistance is on a first come, first serve basis, and only available during income tax season.

Taxpayers should bring the tax instruction booklets received in the mail, records of income and deductions including W-2, W-2P and 1099 forms, statements showing interest and dividends, a copy of last year’s tax return, and any other pertinent records. The La Mirada Activity Center is located at 13810 La Mirada Blvd. in the La Mirada Civic Center.

SENIOR EXERCISE
La Mirada Community Gymnasium

Senior exercise is a class for seniors. This is a free class that offers two different exercise times.
Judy's exercise class consists of stretching, floor exercise on mats, and aerobic exercise including a walk in the park.
Lea's exercise class is designed for chair exercise, which focuses on stretching and a light aerobic exercise. This class is designed for individuals more comfortable exercising from a seated position. Wheelchairs are also welcome. If this sounds like something you would enjoy, please come join us!

SHORT STORY READING CLASS:
Every Friday, 12:30-2:30pm
La Mirada Activity Center

La Mirada Seniors may join a Short Story Reading Class and share their thoughts and feelings with their peers on some of the world's greatest literature. Following each reading selection, the class will discuss the story's plot, characters, setting, and culture. Cerritos College instructor, Elijah Levy, Ph.D., will select a variety of authors including Kafka, Hemingway, Dostoevsky, and Faulkner. Students may join at any time. Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP), Counselor Mike Salazar provides information, counseling, and advocacy on Medicare coverage, claims costs and appeals, health maintenance organizations (HMO's), Medicare supplemental insurance, long-term care insurance, and the rights of health care consumers.
