Food Insecurity Screening Efforts in Los Angeles County Brief Release
The Nutrition and Physical Activity program partnered with RAND Corporation to conduct an evaluation of a local food insecurity screening project. The brief, Food Insecurity Screening Efforts in Los Angeles County, 2019 included key informant interviews with staff from five healthcare clinics that have implemented food insecurity screening, as well as an intercept survey with over 1,000 clinic patients. The brief provides detailed information about patients’ experience with food insecurity, perceptions of health care provider sensitivity to food insecurity, and lessons learned from agencies conducting food insecurity screening in low-income clinics.
Food Distribution Efforts in Los Angeles County Brief Release
The Nutrition and Physical Activity partnered with RAND Corporation to conduct an evaluation of a local food distribution project. The brief, Food Distribution Efforts in Los Angeles County, 2018 included key informant interviews with staff from eight DPH SNAP-Ed funded agencies that were working on food distribution, as well as intercept surveys with participants across five food distribution sites. The brief provides detailed information about participants’ experience with food distribution, as well as barriers, facilitators, and recommendations for agencies that are conducting food distribution.

On September 28, 2017, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health released a new report on the state of food insecurity in the county. More than half a million households earning less than 300% of the federal poverty level (FPL) are food insecure, which means many people face barriers purchasing nutritional foods at some time during the year. The report includes a series of recommendations for multi-sector partnership and innovation to increase access to healthy foods.

We hosted a food demonstration at Adventist White Memorial Medical Center's Living Well Fair with Farmers' Market. White Memorial and the American Heart Association kick off a special awareness campaign in the NICU. In addition, the event highlighted the Vive Bien older adult wellness program.
