Ways to Promote Tdap

Receive Free Tdap Vaccine

Maximize convenience for patients by providing Tdap vaccine in your clinic. Contact CPSP Health Education Consultant for more information:

Tdap Vaccine is a Medi-Cal Pharmacy Benefit (available at no charge to patient)

For Medi-Cal Managed Care patients, call the member services number on the back of their Medi-Cal Benefits Identification Card (BIC). For Medi-Cal Fee-for-service (including Presumptive Eligibility), call your local pharmacy to confirm availability.

Implement Standing Orders

Research shows increased acceptance of Tdap by the patient/family if the physician/provider verbally recommends Tdap vaccination during prenatal visits.   Consider implementing standing orders for Tdap. Click here for an example.

Give Consistent Tdap Message

All clinic team members should give the same message when educating patients and their family/support system regarding the importance, timing, safety, effectiveness of the Tdap vaccine.

Say: “The Tdap vaccine protects you and your baby from pertussis (whooping cough).”

Say: “The whooping cough vaccine during your 3rd trimester will help protect your baby starting at their first breath.”

Don’t Say: “If you don’t get Tdap, your baby can get really sick.”
