Reducing Alcohol-Related Harms in Los Angeles County

Note: The December 2011 version reflects revisions made after an error was discovered in geocoding of the motor vehicle crash data used in this report. The error has been corrected and resulted only in changes to the reported alcohol-involved motor vehicle crash rates and rankings for cities and communities listed in Table 2. The logistic regression analysis of motor vehicle crashes on p. 6 was accordingly updated; the regression results were similar to what was previously reported, and there were no changes to report conclusions. None of the other results or data provided in the report were affected.

Life Expectancy in Los Angeles County

The Office of Health Assessment and Epidemiology has released a report showing the recent trends in life expectancy among the cities and communities in the County. The report shows that although life expectancy has been on the rise, significant demographic and geographic disparities do exist. It also highlights the need for communities to improve the health of their residents by creating places of living that promote health and well-being, provide economic opportunities, as well as foster social connectedness.

The Epidemiology Unit would also like to present Getting Prepared for Census 2010 Data, an informative brochure that highlights the Census-related data resources available for public health analysts to use for their reports and analyses. This includes:

  • Up-to-date information regarding Census 2010
  • Comparison of Census 2010 to previous Census 2000
  • The new American Community Survey (ACS)
  • Glossary of useful Census terms
  • Detailed maps of Los Angeles County for various geographies

Welcome to the Epidemiology Unit

Epidemiology is the study of health and disease in communities. As a key component, the Epidemiology Unit supports the Mission of the Office of Health Assessment and Epidemiology:

To ensure the availability of high-quality and comprehensive health data on the Los Angeles County population and to facilitate its use for public health assessment, policy development, and program planning and evaluation.

Key activities of the Epidemiology Unit include to:

  1. Provide epidemiology support and training among Department programs and offices and community partners, especially toward chronic disease prevention and where such capacity does not currently exist.
  2. Centralize technology, training, and resources for Geographic Information Systems (GIS) within the Department.
  3. Standardize and make available data on demographics, childhood overweight, hospital discharge diagnoses, health-related quality of life, and other indicators of community health.
  4. Participate in the conduct of special studies and projects, especially those that integrate efforts among Department programs and offices and community partners.
