The Body Art Unit
enforces the Los Angeles County Body Art Ordinance.
Body art includes tattooing, body piercing, and
permanent make-up. This ordinance requires all
practitioners who perform body art to register and
obtain a health permit with the County, comply with
specified requirements, including client information and questionnaires, vaccination, blood-borne pathogen training, and sanitation. The ordinance requires the owner of a body art facility to obtain a health permit and maintain the body art facility in a specified manner. The ordinance allows the county to set the fee amount for registration and/or permitting at an amount sufficient to cover the actual costs of administering the program.
The Body Art Unit also regulates the performance of body art in
permanent and temporary premises including vehicles, temporary booths, and at body art events and requires
the person sponsoring a body art event to obtain a permit and fulfill specified requirements. The Body Art
Unit conducts inspection and initiates suspension or revocation of a health permit in specified circumstances.
